The Red Piano Art Gallery is honored to present an upcoming artist show featuring the celebrated plein air painter Mark Boedges. The event will take place on Friday, November 7, 2025, from 5-7 pm, and guests will have the special opportunity to meet the artist in person while enjoying his extraordinary collection of work.
About Mark Boedges
Mark Boedges has established himself as one of today’s premier plein air painters, admired for his ability to capture the natural world with honesty, atmosphere, and depth. Although painting has been a lifelong passion, his serious pursuit of the craft began during and after college. Initially studying philosophy at the University of Kansas, Mark later turned his focus to fine art at the University of Colorado before deciding to fully immerse himself in the study of painting directly from nature.
His dedication to plein air painting quickly sharpened his skills, leading to an immensely successful first show in 2003 that nearly sold out. Over the years, Mark has continued to refine his art by seeking guidance from other master painters, attending workshops, and, most importantly, spending countless hours painting on location.
Awards and Recognition
Mark’s work has garnered widespread acclaim and multiple prestigious honors. Among his top achievements are:
- Grand Prize for Landscape and a cover feature in International Artist magazine
- Joseph Hartley Memorial Award at the Salmagundi Club in New York City
- Best in Show at the American Impressionist Society’s National Exhibition
- Best in Show at the Scottsdale Salon of Fine Art
- These accolades reflect both his technical mastery and his emotional connection to the subjects he paints.
Inspirations in the Lowcountry
Mark is deeply inspired by the landscapes and character of the American South, particularly the Lowcountry. As he describes:
“Nothing feels more like the Lowcountry to me, and the South generally, than warm, humid evenings. To that end I wanted to capture the trawlers that I love to paint in the evening as the sun is going down. The warm glowing colors of the evening light really highlight the boats’ characteristic feel for me.”
Another recurring subject in his work is the southern live oak. Unlike other deciduous trees, their sprawling, irregular canopies and draping Spanish moss provide a dramatic interplay of light and form. Mark often paints from underneath their massive branches, likening them to “giant gangly hands reaching up to the light from above.”
