At The Red Piano Art Gallery, we are proud to represent artists who express a profound sense of beauty and connection through their work—and few exemplify this more than Joseph Lorusso. A master of mood, emotion, and intimate storytelling, Lorusso’s work invites viewers into quiet, contemplative moments that feel both personal and universal.
A Journey Rooted in Classical Influence and Self-Discovery
Born in Chicago in 1966 and of Italian descent, Joseph Lorusso was introduced to the world of art at an early age. Family trips to Italy offered him firsthand exposure to the great Italian Masters—an influence that continues to resonate in his paintings today. His formal training began at the American Academy of Art and culminated in a B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute. While Lorusso majored in watercolor, his evolution as an oil painter was largely self-directed. He credits much of his growth to countless hours spent studying masterworks at the Chicago Art Institute, where lunch breaks often turned into full afternoons of inspiration and self-study.
Capturing the Human Condition in Paint
Lorusso’s paintings are more than beautiful—they are deeply narrative and emotionally evocative. Whether he’s portraying a quiet exchange between lovers or a solitary figure lost in thought, his subjects feel familiar, as if lifted from our own memories. “I believe truly great art serves as a trigger into something deeper within all of us,” says Lorusso. This philosophy drives his entire approach to artmaking.
His work is celebrated for capturing the romantic, mysterious, and often melancholic undertones of everyday life. Through subtle brushwork and muted tones, Lorusso creates a dreamlike quality that draws viewers in and invites personal interpretation. These are not just paintings—they are emotional landscapes.
A Legacy of Excellence in Figurative Realism
Throughout his career, Lorusso has become widely recognized as a leading figure in contemporary figurative realism. He honed his understanding of color, composition, and form through deep observation and rigorous study. Inspired by artists like Manet, Vuillard, Sargent, Sorolla, and Whistler, Lorusso developed a refined visual language that balances emotional power with elegant restraint.
His artwork has been exhibited internationally and featured in numerous publications including American Artist, Southwest Art, Art News, Art & Antiques, American Art Collector, and International Artist. Lorusso has also contributed to the next generation of artists, teaching painting and drawing at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Scottsdale Artists School.
Widely Collected and Internationally Celebrated
Joseph Lorusso’s work is held in private and public collections around the world. His paintings are part of the permanent collections at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum in Missouri, the Beach Museum at Kansas State University, and the Wichita Museum of Art. He has also worked professionally with Hallmark Cards, serving as an artist in their greeting card division for over a decade.
