At The Red Piano Art Gallery, we are honored to feature the works of artist Jane DeDecker, a sculptor who has spent over thirty-five years capturing the essence of the human condition through her masterful figurative sculptures. Born in Marengo, Iowa, in 1961, DeDecker’s upbringing on a family farm with nine siblings instilled in her a deep connection to nature and human nature, both of which are vividly reflected in her art. DeDecker’s sculptures pause life at a breath, between inhaling and exhaling, capturing those fleeting moments that define our existence and resonate with the viewer on an intrinsic level.
DeDecker’s artistic journey has been marked by her commitment to communicating emotional experiences through her sculptures. Her pieces often depict simple yet profound moments, such as a family waking with the dawn or a man balancing a wheelbarrow, which symbolize larger truths about life. These scenes, drawn from her observations and memories, are brought to life in three-dimensional form, allowing viewers to feel the emotions and stories embedded within each work. Her sculpting process is as meticulous as it is heartfelt, with each gesture and detail informed by extensive research and a deep understanding of her subjects.
As a member of the National Sculpture Society since 1998, and a Fellow since 2007, DeDecker has placed over 175 public sculptures across the United States, each telling a unique story that honors the history and spirit of its community. Notable installations include “Harriet Tubman” at the Clinton Library in Arkansas, “Emily Dickinson” at Converse College in South Carolina, and “On the Banks of Sugar Creek,” a touching tribute to the Thompson Child and Family Focus organization. This latest work exemplifies DeDecker’s ability to connect with her subjects on a profound level, translating their essence into a sculpture that speaks to both the past and present.
